Learning the hard way

When sharing what you know doesn't really make that much difference

#FridayAfternoonThought What have you learnt the hard way?

As a former teacher, trainer, researcher, insight consultant and coach (yeah, yeah, I'm quite old!) my most hard won lesson is: 📣

💡 Any idea/lesson/message/product/project/service/... is only relevant to people when they are ready and have a need.

This is such a simple truth, yet so easy to overlook or ignore.

Applied to a product or even organisational change - how many new things have been expensively introduced only to fail because people didn't see the need and therefore weren't ready or willing to find the right way?

For individuals - you adopt a new idea and think 'of course', only to realise later on that you'd come across that 3 years ago and it hadn't resonated

🔉 That happened to me this week. At a business workshop there was a brilliant speaker about developing your brand story. It felt as though he had crafted his presentation especially for me and I am working on it enthusiastically.

🚅 On the way home, I reflected that quite a few talented people had talked to me about brand story over the years so I did actually have quite a lot of the knowledge filed away. I hadn't been ready, I hadn't had such a need and so the knowledge hadn't been brought to life for me.

What happened this week was right time, right place.

Everyone is starting from where they happen to be at that time.
