#FridayAfternoonThought Recovery from any setback will almost always take longer than you thought.
As a character in one of Marian Keyes' novels says "setbacks, well, they set you back".
Health, shocks, fraud, family issues, redundancy... you name it, they set you back.
A positive mindset and focus on the future all help with recovery, of course. But there's more.
My own recovery from cancer surgery is up and down. My recovery from fraud a couple of years ago took a long time.
The two top things that have helped the most:
1. Ask for and accept help. This has been a game-changer in so many ways. Obviously the help at the time but then comes the feeling of being supported, followed by a realisation that helping people brings real and tangible value to them.
2. Be kind. Whether you are recovering yourself, supporting a friend, colleague, family member or managing a team member, dealing with a boss.who is recovering, be kind and patient with them.
You don't know what cliff-faces they are facing.
